Area Information

Ueda City is a place associated with the Sanada clan, including Sanada Yukimura, who was famous as a brave and loyal general.
Ueda Castle, known as a famous castle that has fought off the Tokugawa army twice,
There are many historical sites, including the remains of the residence of the Sanada clan before they built Ueda Castle, and Hasedera Temple.
The exploits of Sanada Yukimura and his men are still a source of pride for the castle town of Ueda and are deeply engraved in the hearts of the citizens.

On the other hand, Ueda area is blessed with a rich natural environment, and is a rare area in Japan with little rainfall.
Many of the original Japanese landscapes, such as historic houses, remain in the area.
It has been the setting for over 85 classic films to date.
  • Historical streets along the Hokkoku Kaido

    • Yanagimachi

      Yanagimachi still retains traces of the Hokkoku Kaido road.
      This is a neighborhood with the largest number of lattice-style houses remaining in the city.
      The eaves sign, the sake brewery with its smell of sake, and the small sparrow dancing are all just as they were in the Edo period.
      Yanagimachi Street has retained the appearance from the Edo period to the Meiji period,
      It has been used as a filming location for many classic movies.
    • Unnojuku

      This road is an important road that connects the Nakasendo and Hokuriku roads.
      It was used to transport gold mined in Sado and as a route for feudal lords in the Hokuriku region to travel to Edo for alternate attendance.
      Transportation with Edo was also extremely busy, and many pilgrims to Zenkoji Temple passed through the area.
      In addition, as a place where historical streetscapes remain, it was selected as one of the "100 Best Roads in Japan (37th place)" by the Ministry of Construction in 1986.
      In 1987, the area was designated as an "Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings" by the Ministry of Education.
      The Unnojuku Fureai Festival is held every year on November 23rd.

      Ueda Castle

      It was designated as a prefectural treasure on November 9, 1959.
      Ueda Castle was built by Masayuki Sanada, a former retainer of the Takeda clan of Kai.
      It is a flat castle built in 1583 (Tensho 11).
      During the Edo period, Ueda clan's administrative office was located here, and after the Sanada clan was transferred to Matsushiro in Shinano Province, the Sengoku clan moved into the castle and rebuilt the destroyed Ueda Castle to its current appearance.

      Every year during cherry blossom viewing season, the area becomes bustling with local residents and tourists.
      The city also houses a municipal baseball stadium, a civic hall, and a city museum.

      Ikushima-Tarushima Shrine

      Monjudo

      Climb the 46 stone steps and pass between the pair of cedar trees to reach Monjudo.
      The dragon painted on the ceiling is particularly impressive.
      Every year from the end of the year until February, about 200 ice lanterns are lined up on the stone steps.
      "Ice Lantern Dream Prayer" will be held.

      Godai Bridge

      This is a rare covered bridge that spans the valley of Uchimura River.
      It is said to be a bridge connecting the earthly world and the divine world.
      It is especially beautiful during the seasons of new greenery and autumn leaves.
    • National Treasure Anrakuji Temple Octagonal Three-story Pagoda

      The only octagonal tower in Japan.
      Built in the architectural style of the Chinese Song Dynasty, it is the first building in Nagano Prefecture to be designated a national treasure.
      At first glance, it looks like a four-story pagoda, but the bottom roof is called the mokoshi,
      It is called a three-story pagoda because it has what appears to be a eaves.
    • Maeyamaji Temple

      This temple has a beautiful three-story pagoda called the "Unfinished Completed Pagoda".
      It was founded by Kobo Daishi during the Heian period and also became a place of prayer for the Shioda Hojo clan.
      Behind the impressive black gate, there is a path lined with large pine and zelkova trees.(Trees lining the approach to Maeyamaji Temple)

      National Treasure Daihoji Temple

      Daihou-ji Temple Three Story Pagoda was built at the end of the Kamakura period and is affectionately known as the "Looking Back Pagoda."
      This name comes from the beautiful appearance of the tower.
      It is said that this name was given because it is so beautiful that it makes you look back without thinking.

      Utsukushigahara Plateau

      Utsukushigahara Plateau is located in the northernmost part of the Yatsugatake Chushin Highlands Quasi-National Park.
      It is a lava plateau that spreads over an area of approximately 600 hectares at an altitude of approximately 2,000 meters.
      Hana no Kogen Plateau, the highest and widest in Japan, offers an impressive 360-degree panoramic view of Northern Alps and Southern Alps, the Yatsugatake Mountains, and even Mt Fuji!
      It is also known as the Alps Observation Deck.
      In the summer, the animals are grazed and you can see cows everywhere.
